Juvenile youth teens

Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come.  You wait and watch and work: You don’t give up.

Parenting with Love and Limits Program Details

Brush Dance Clinic serves the Northern Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. We are certified trainers in the Parenting with Love and Limits® program.

Parenting With Love and Limits® is a parenting education program that integrates the best principles of a structural family therapy approach into a comprehensive 6-week program for juvenile delinquent populations with the primary diagnosis of oppositional defiant or conduct disorder.

The key ingredient is parental involvement and providing parents with the proper skills to address their adolescents’ behavioral problems.

The program is designed to provide parents with specific tools and techniques (e.g., contracting, troubleshooting, using creative consequences, anti–button pushing tactics) to reestablish their ability to determine rules and restore nurturance to the parent–child relationship.

How Long Does it Take?

The program consists of six 2-hour classes. In each class you will gain a clear picture of why your teen misbehaves, the tools you need to stop the problems and the next steps to take.

What Results Can I Expect?

We will help solve the issues that exist between you and your teen. In this program, we will hear and address your particular problems and provide you with hands-on ideas and help. As part of the classes, you and your teen will develop a creative, personalized contract that contains rules and consequences for your specific situation.

Is My Teen Involved in the Program?

We will actively involve your teenager. We have separate breakout groups throughout the six classes for teens and parents. This gets your teen really involved with you and with other teens and everyone gets to learn about responsibility and accountability for actions. If your teen refuses to come, it is no big deal. Just let him/her know things will be changing. The class is designed so that you can come alone or bring your teen.

What Topics are Covered?

The 6 classes will cover all seven steps to reestablishing parental authority.

Class #1 - Step 1: Venting and Why Out-of Control Teens Misbehave.

Parents learn why their teen uses things such as substance abuse, truancy, disrespect, running away, or violence to defeat parents each time they try to regain control of their household. Parents and teens go into their respective breakout groups to vent their feelings and frustrations.

Class #2 - Step 2: Button-Pushing: How Teenagers Defeat Parents During Arguments.

Parents learn how their teen skillfully pushes their hot buttons (whining, disgusted look, swearing, etc.), and teens learn how parents push theirs (lecturing, criticizing, talking in chapters, etc.).

Class #3 - Step 3: Why Your Current Contracts Ironclad Contracting.

Parents learn how and why their old methods of contracting have failed and the five microsteps to assemble an ironclad contract that actually works with the use of both rewards and consequences. Teens meet in their breakout groups to help write their own contract.

Step 4: How to Mobilize Outside Helpers Like Friends and Neighbors.

Class #4 - Step 5: Contracting and Troubleshooting: Pulling it All Together.

Parents learn how teens have a special ability called “enhanced social perception” to think two steps ahead and derail even the best-laid contract.

Class #5 – Step 6: Stopping the Teenager’s “7 Aces”. “Parents Only” Night.

Parents choose from a recipe menu of creative consequences to stop the teen’s seven “aces” or “big guns” of disrespect, ditching or failing school, running away, drugs or alcohol, sexual promiscuity, violence, and threats of suicide.

Class #6 - Step 7: How to Restore Lost Nurturance and Tenderness.

Parents understand how years of conflict have drained the softness from the parent–child relationship and the six strategies needed to reclaim this lost love.

Parents will receive a detailed treatment manual on curtailing their teenagers’ substance abuse and other behavior problems.
